Pogo Sticks
Invented in the 1910s by George Hansburg, the Pogo stick became a real fashion phenomenon in the interwar period. Popularized by the Ziegfeld Follies during their Broadway shows, the spring instrument has never ceased to be produced in the United States. Since its inception, records as numerous as they are wacky have filled the pages of the Guinness Book as that of the greatest distance traveled - in 1997, by Ashrita Furman, who jumped for 12 h 21 min over 37.18 km - or the number of jumps - by Gary Stewart, who bounced 177,737 times in 20h 20m.
Today, the discipline is experiencing a new lease of life thanks to a more extreme use, close to skateboarding. Going "Boing-boing" has never been more trendy than with a Pogo stick.
