The fiery and flaming clown

Nikito doesn't just stick to the stage, he likes to wander around and meet festival-goers to offer them moments of fiery spectacle. He is capable of creating a performance anywhere, at the corner of an alley, at the corner of a stand or in the shadow of a shop. His style is full of creativity, humor and originality. His unique personality leaves no one indifferent.

The Devil's Stick, a demanding discipline

Devil's stick is a juggling discipline where a stick is held in the air between two rods. The discipline exists with flaming or non-flaming equipment. Nikito specializes in flower sticks , which are a derivative of devil's sticks (with frills/flowers at the ends). The discipline requires great dexterity and perfect mastery of gestures. Nikito has made this discipline his specialty, creating performances that defy the laws of gravity and combine technical virtuosity and artistic creativity .

In short, El Nikito Pyro Clown is an exceptional circus artist , who combines the art of juggling with the art of fire show to create original and fascinating performances. His poetic and offbeat universe is an invitation to discovery and wonder, for young and old alike. How did you discover your passion for juggling and the devil stick discipline?

My passion came at the age of 15, I left school to meet friends in a bar. as usual when suddenly on the quays at Verdun, I saw a group of jugglers performing having fun together, it captivated me and I stayed watching them for an hour before one one of them offered me to try. So I ended up with a devil's stick in my hands and I have to say that it came straight away, so much so that at the end of the day, the friend who had lent me the stick, kindly offered it to me and I never let go of it again.

What inspires you in your artistic practice, particularly in your approach to fiery juggling?

After a few weeks of testing my stick, I was very intrigued by the fire! I burned my 1st time and it's stupid but it made me realize how dangerous fire is and that it is not within everyone's reach to be able to express themselves with it. As time went on, the training paid off and I felt ready to try again. I then experienced a feeling that I will never forget, pleasure and that warm feeling. each movement. Later, we can add certain types of music that I like I felt comfortable but above all I always tried to create through my emotions, my states in the mood to clear my head and see what I could get out of it.

Can you tell us about your experience as a tattooed clown and how it has influenced your artistic practice?

I have been enjoying my sticks for 20 years now and over all these years my clown emerged only after 11 years of working on my technique. I did of course a lot of street work, shows at festivals , juggling conventions to give an identity to my character but it was not not easy. So I looked for a universe in which I could offer my services and that's how it was that in 2015 I was given the opportunity to walk around and do my juggling act in tattoo convention (in Luxembourg). This experience went so well that the The phone started ringing and that was the beginning of a very long adventure for my clown in tattoo convention.

How do you choose the music and locations for your performances to create a particular atmosphere and emotion?

The music and locations of my performances are always random depending on the customer requests. Before going on stage, I love to walk around to create a first connection with the public , play with them and test all my ideas a little, keep some to remove others. Once I arrived on stage, the curiosity that was created while I was walking around brings the audience to come and laugh with me, my show becomes interactive . This makes you work in a sense of my creativity in always trying to change my game, my music, my interactions to to give each performance a unique version of what I can offer.

How do you work on your creativity to offer ever more original and surprising performances?

Maintaining your level while using flaming items is not easy but there is no secret, you have to work hard on your technique regardless of the discipline and then don't ask yourself any questions, just try to put into practice what you think you have mastered without hesitation! Little by little or still step by step, you have to know how to stay reasonable in your learning and not go too far quickly.

How do you manage to maintain your performance level while using flaming objects, which can pose a danger?

My character has the advantage of being multifaceted. I will be able to adapt my makeup according to depending on the type of event and the demand and play my number with a certain intensity! At a tattoo convention, for example, my clown becomes trashy or dark, whereas at a festival on the street or during my interventions in structures such as hospitals or youth centers , I become again more classic.

A question that often comes up in our interviews: how do you manage your drops during a show? (falling juggled objects)

I don't have too many problems with the drops, the advantage of working the clown is that the drops become natural, sometimes the public is convinced that the drop is done on purpose when it is not at all! I consider myself lucky in that respect.

What about the wind outdoors? How do you manage it during a fire show?

Wind, like rain, are important criteria when performing outdoors. I try to adapt as best I can within reason. If it's too dangerous, It is better to cancel your service . The weather is the main criterion to take into account if you must play outdoors.

Tell us a little about your custom flower stick creations and what techniques you use to create objects that are both aesthetic and functional?

The sticks I make are the logical continuation of my passion. The hardest part was finding the suppliers. but with patience I finally found everything I needed to create perfect sticks for me. It was Covid and the period of confinement that made me say to myself: I would like people test my sticks and if they want, offer them the possibility of customizing theirs . Have fun with colors and sizes according to requests but above all personally to tell me Every time someone wants a stick, they might be a future follower and the community grows. You can find my creations on my social networks (FB: Nico Sanchez and Instagram: Nikitoclown) or and you will just have to send me a simple message to explain your request. You can also find some on Netjuggler.

What are your future plans as a circus artist, and how do you plan to develop your artistic practice?

My project for several years now has been to set up an artistic residency and do experience the place through internships , daily classes and events such as cabaret, conventions, etc.
Or just a creative space open to anyone who wants peace and quiet to work in shows, acts etc.
Imagination has no limits.

What advice would you give to young artists who want to get into juggling or other circus disciplines?

The only advice I would give to anyone wanting to get into the world of circus and entertainment is about having fun no matter what . It's a long road and sometimes difficult when you are trying to develop your technique, so have faith in what you undertake! Finding your artistic identity will be the most complicated, but it's by doing things with the heart. What wonderful surprises can appear !

Looking forward to seeing you all. Thanks to NetJuggler for sharing this.
